Application strategy
How to prepare a compelling Statement of Purpose
Structure your SOP with clarity, evidence, and impact-driven stories that admissions committees remember.
Your Statement of Purpose is the one place in your application where the admissions committee hears your voice. A strong SOP connects your past, your present goals, and the specific programme you are applying to in a single, focused narrative.
Use the STAR framework (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for each example you give. Instead of saying you are 'passionate about data', show a project where you turned messy data into a decision, and what changed because of it.
Tailor every SOP to the specific university and course. Name the modules, professors, or research groups that fit your goals. Generic SOPs are the easiest to reject; specific ones signal genuine intent.
